Gilpin County raises capitalization threshold to $10,000 to align with state and federal rules
Summary

Gilpin County commissioners voted 3-0 on March 10 to adopt Resolution 26-024, increasing the county's capitalization threshold from $5,000 to $10,000.
Finance staff said the change follows late-2024 adjustments by state and federal authorities and will reduce administrative tracking for many items that previously required capitalization. "Everything costs over $5,000 now," the presenter said, explaining the administrative difficulty of maintaining a $5,000 threshold.
Commissioners discussed the frequency of reviewing the threshold and noted the county periodically examines the capitalization policy; the board approved the change to apply to the 2025 audit year and all succeeding years.
The resolution passed unanimously. Staff said the change was intended to keep the county in compliance with grant rules while streamlining asset accounting.
