Palo Alto Unified begins long-range facilities master plan, trustees ask how it will link to strategic priorities

District staff and consultants on Tuesday kicked off a long-range facilities master-plan process, saying the work will assess existing campus conditions, program needs and funding approaches and produce a multi-decade roadmap.
Eric Holm introduced CW Architects principal Brent McClure, who said the early phase includes campus walks, focus groups and visioning workshops, with a draft set of goals and projects expected for board review next spring. McClure said the firm will examine deferred maintenance, program adjacencies and site constraints such as flood plains while developing guiding principles and prioritization scenarios.
Trustees asked how the facilities plan will interact with an overall district strategic plan and with sustainability objectives. "How does it make sense to talk about facilities when we don't have an overall district strategic plan?" a public commenter asked, and trustees acknowledged the need to align facilities investments with enrollment and program trends.
McClure said the master plan will include campus-level recommendations, phasing and a budgeting framework and that the team will return to the board in spring to solicit input from trustees and community stakeholders.
