Lighthouse Charter School leaders delivered their annual update to the Washington Unified board on May 22, outlining curricular priorities, student supports and governance practices under the charter agreement.
Superintendent Roxanna Via Seenor described Lighthouse's emphasis on project-based learning, arts and music and shared examples of community engagement, including partnerships with the West Sacramento Chamber of Commerce. Aaron Kelly, Lighthouse speech-language pathologist, highlighted social-emotional learning and inclusive special-education services supported by a multidisciplinary team of specialists.
Board chair Omar Gario and union representatives including Mary Gomes and Natalie Fernandez joined Lighthouse teachers to describe governance and staffing. Gomes said the charter union has helped with recruitment and retention through contract protections and pay improvements since 2021; Lighthouse reported 80% membership density in its bargaining unit and described recent retention figures (72% in 2022'23; 60% in 2023'24; a projected 73% for the coming year based on recent data).
Trustees asked about governance (number and makeup of board members), enrollment trends and staffing; Lighthouse leaders said they would provide additional details and meet individually with trustees where needed. The presentation was informational and no board action was required.
