Jared Boom, a Hallwood-area parent, told the Marysville Joint Unified School District board that removal of the Cordova stop from bus route 19 has left several students without a safe pickup location and that district notice arrived only the night before school.
"My child alone is 11 years old. Her closest stop now is over a mile walk away," Boom said, describing routes that require students to cross multiple main roads and walk on unlit back roads. He said some staff and teachers who rely on the Cordova stop to coordinate family pickups are now unable to do so because their work schedules prevent the longer round trips.
Board members asked clarifying questions and said staff would look into the timing and notification process. "Let me look into that and talk with the board and see if we can get an answer back for you," a trustee said during the exchange.
Boom said the change affects families who rely on the stop for protection during foul weather and to avoid exposure to heavy truck traffic along alternate routes. He asked the board to consider restoring the stop or otherwise addressing routing and safety concerns.
The board did not announce a specific remedy during the meeting. The superintendent's office indicated staff would follow up with the commenter after checking details of the notice and routes. The district did not provide a timeline for any change during the session.
