The owners of a newly opened Seven Brothers Burgers in Cedar City asked the council to waive a late fee after renewal notices were sent to their business address in Washington County rather than their Cedar City location.
Brigham Moretti said the restaurant opened in late October and that renewal notices went to his Washington address; after a staff change at their Washington location he missed the mailed renewal and discovered delinquent notices in February. "I'm fully on me that I put the address wrong... but I'm asking for a little bit of grace as a first‑time offender and a small business owner," Moretti told the council.
Council members discussed the notice schedule (original mailed Nov. 25, delinquent mailed Jan. 21 and a follow‑up mailed Feb. 19) and the practical effects of waiving a fee for precedent. Several council members described similar experiences paying late fees and suggested exploring electronic notification options to reduce mail‑related misses.
Tanya Payne, another business owner who spoke during the public hearing, said she expects to be responsible for renewing a city license and urged consistent compliance. The council voted to schedule the matter as an action item for the next meeting to allow a formal vote.
Next step: staff will place the waiver request on the council action agenda for consideration next week.
