Center Joint Unified superintendent highlights student media programs, literacy gains and survey results

Scott Lair, superintendent of the Center Joint Unified School District, posted a short update from the Media Communications Academy studio at Center High to highlight student media programs, upcoming survey results and recent reading gains.
"This broadcasting studio is a great example of just one of the many ways our district provides students with hands-on learning opportunities," Lair said, noting the Media Communications Academy and other CTE pathways "equip students with hands-on skills and real-world experience for success in college and in their careers." He thanked the Sacramento Educational Cable Consortium for its partnership in supporting studios across the district.
Lair said the district operates broadcasting studios at Oakhill Elementary, North Country Elementary, Riyals Middle School and Center High. "That's pretty amazing and it's thanks to the support and partnership we have with the SECCC," he said.
On family engagement, Lair announced that the family climate survey closed last week and thanked participants. He said the district expects to have the survey results and next steps by the end of the month and plans to share the findings with families.
On academics, Lair reiterated that improving literacy "remains a huge focus for the school year," stressing that phonological awareness skills are essential for early readers. He announced three recipients of the superintendent's impact reading award and cited results from the district's I-Ready assessments: a 58% increase in phonological awareness for Miss Lyndon's kindergarten class at Dudley; a 31% increase in first-grade phonics for Miss Julia Meyers and Miss Martin's class at Oakhill Elementary on the I-Ready Skills assessment; and a 52% increase in phonics for Miss Lori Day's second-grade class at Rex Fortune.
"I am so proud of all of our teachers for making such a huge impact on our students," Lair said, thanking educators and support staff before closing the update and urging the community to "keep the learning momentum going and end this school year very strong."
