Board hears La Sierra University proposal for direct‑admit pathway for CJUSD students

Colton Joint Unified School District board members on Sept. 18 received a presentation about a proposed direct‑admission partnership with La Sierra University designed to expand access to four‑year degrees for district students.
Dr. Mooney, the district’s director of secondary education, introduced La Sierra’s delegation and said the agreement on the board agenda would create direct‑admission pathways for qualified CJUSD high school students. La Sierra President Dr. Arthur told the board the university is a Hispanic‑Serving Institution with more than 120 majors and said many of its students are first‑generation college students. He described outreach and campus visits as priorities and invited board members and district counselors to tour the campus.
Board members praised the proposal as a way to make college more attainable for local students and suggested focused outreach to parents and AVID and counseling programs so families understand nearby college options. Board Member Ibara recommended starting with AVID visits and coordinating counselor outreach; other trustees emphasized the university’s local proximity as important for families who cannot afford large dorm or living costs.
Dr. Arthur recounted a student story (Jacqueline) to illustrate the university’s mission of lifting families through education and reiterated La Sierra’s willingness to host a board meeting or campus tour. The board indicated it expects to consider the agreement later in the agenda and to approve the item as presented.
