A board member told the Racial Equity Committee that the Board of Education voted last week to send a proposed budget to the county executive that requests "just over $30 million in additional funds" beyond a maintenance funding level.
"We requested um just over $30 million in additional [clears throat] funds beyond what we would have gotten if they were just maintaining our funding level for next year," the board member said, adding the county allocation will be known in about five to six weeks and the board will likely need to adjust its request when the county decision is released.
The board member encouraged committee members and community residents to follow the county process and attend upcoming hearings for the county executive and county council if they want to advocate for full funding. They noted budget documents and the FCPS budget page are publicly available online for those seeking details.
The member also briefly updated the committee on policy work, saying the policy committee is advancing two comprehensive revisions (bullying, harassment, discrimination and intimidation) to the full board because of their expected significance to students, staff and community interactions.
No votes related to budget direction were taken in the meeting; the committee was informed of the board's action and the expected timeline for the county response.
