Senior center renovation and two accessible vans funded by grants, donations; cemetery columbarium sales provide ongoing revenue

Parks staff reported March 10 that the senior center will undergo a reception area renovation to improve ADA accessibility and functionality, and that funding sources for the work include $25,000 in city funds, a $25,000 township match and a roughly $52,000 community investment grant from Green County.
Aaron, the staff presenter, said construction drawings were completed and an RFP will be issued with plans to begin construction in July if procurement proceeds on schedule. “We just got the construction drawings back for a reception area renovation,” Aaron said.
On transportation, staff reported about $180,000 in donations have been raised toward van replacements. Aaron said the city also received an ODOT grant of $116,000 (stated as covering approximately 80% of one van) and is eligible for a $40,000 Green County Council on Aging grant; combined with donations this funding will allow purchase of two vans designed to carry four wheelchairs each. Staff said the two current vans are about 10 years old and spend more time in the garage than on the road.
Staff also reviewed cemetery operations: parks staff assist with cemetery management alongside a full‑time sexton and a part‑time clerk. The board heard that a second columbarium of 40 double niches was installed and 16 niches have sold (12 presold before installation). Half of columbarium revenue flows to the general fund and half to a long‑term cemetery bequest fund to cover ongoing care and maintenance.
Board members thanked staff for fundraising and community support for the van program and discussed volunteer involvement in upcoming events.
