The Alachua County commission approved a resolution to rename the 515 North Main Street property the Josiah T. Walls Building and directed staff to work with the historical commission on commemorative language and a public interpretive display.
Members discussed whether to include the middle initial 'T.' and whether an additional plaque or kiosk should accompany the naming so passersby would understand Walls’ historical role. Historical Commission representatives recommended a plaque in the lobby or an outdoor kiosk and volunteered to help arrange a ribbon-cutting or unveiling ceremony.
The motion, amended to ask the manager and the historical commission to return with recommended marker language and placement, passed unanimously. Staff will prepare a revised resolution and coordinate an unveiling with community partners.
