Melvin Waldrop, chief of staff to the business administrator, said the wider region will host 104 matches and that eight matches will be at MetLife Stadium; he said one major Newark fanfest in Malberry Park could draw an estimated 8,000–10,000 people and that organizers estimate a $1.7 billion regional spend associated with the event. Waldrop said Newark vendors and restaurants will receive priority for participation and that a toolkit and web portal will be published to help local businesses apply to participate.
Council members pressed administration staff about potential quality-of-life and enforcement issues. Several members questioned how Airbnb and short-term rentals will be monitored, how hotels and police would be resourced on match days, and whether municipal costs will be offset by state or federal support. Business Administrator Eric Pennington said engineering and enforcement would temporarily restore handicap parking signs removed during a federal accessibility review and that existing qualified handicap spaces will be grandfathered while the city researches exceptions. Pennington said staff have instructed engineering to re-post signs pending resolution of federal guidance.
Council members and administration staff discussed outreach to youth soccer organizations and other community groups to ensure equitable participation. Staff asked that ward-based plans and requests for city support be submitted by March 31 to help resource events properly.
Staff said Newark Alliance and Invest Newark are partners in outreach and that Invest Newark would publish more information and a toolkit for local businesses in the coming days.
