Organizers of the Olympia-Lacey fan zone told the Thurston County Board of County Commissioners on March 25 that the event will be staged at the Port Plaza behind the viewing tower and farmers market, a shift organizers said improves logistics, traffic control and connectivity to local businesses.
"We moved the fan zone to the Port Plaza because the plaza already has a lot of the logistics that we needed," Jenny Folia Jones, event coordinator working with the Thurston County Chamber, said during the presentation. She said the location keeps attendees adjacent to the boardwalk and market so visitors can both attend fan-zone programming and patronize local shops and restaurants.
The fan zone will feature two LED screens, a main stage for live entertainment and cultural programming, rotating food vendors (three to four on site, with vendors tailored to match-day themes), sponsor activations and a VIP area. Jones said organizers expect attendance to range from about 2,500 to 5,000 people per match depending on the game and that schedules will typically open roughly two hours before kickoff and remain open an hour after the match; for June 19, a longer window (10 a.m. to 3 p.m.) is planned.
Alcohol service will be contained within a fully fenced fan-zone perimeter; organizers said ID checks will occur at entry and that, under recently revised state rules, patrons who are served alcohol will be permitted to carry it within the fenced event area. Jones said the goal is a family-friendly environment with appropriate screening and stewarding.
To drive foot traffic to downtown businesses, the fan zone will participate in a statewide walking-tour app created by the host-city organizers. Attendees who visit geofenced stops on the Olympia-Lacey tour accumulate tickets that can be redeemed at a statewide fulfillment site; Seattle'area partners also plan periodic prize draws, including opportunities to win tickets to Seattle matches.
Organizers said Seattle'area partners are also providing resources and training materials for vendors and businesses, including human-trafficking awareness training that local businesses can access. Jones said Seattle will coordinate ambassador appearances (athletes or coaches) across zones and that local planners expect assignment details within weeks.
The fan zone is fully outdoors and will operate rain or shine, Jones said. The county and the chamber will continue coordination with the Port, cities and other partners as final logistics, vendor agreements and security plans are completed.
Next steps: organizers will finalize vendor lineups, finalize entertainment and ambassadors in coordination with Seattle, and continue outreach to businesses on promotions and the walking-tour app.
