Council honors two Lawrence student-athletes: Varela and Macdonald

The Lawrence City Council used the start of its March 17 meeting to recognize two local student-athletes for recent statewide accomplishments.
The council approved a resolution honoring Gustavo A. Varela, a senior at Greater Lawrence Technical High School, who officials said finished his high-school career with 6,746 rushing yards and 92 touchdowns, making him the all-time career rushing leader in Massachusetts high school football. Co-sponsors including Councilor Vivian Marmal and Councilor Rosalie Gonzalez presented the citation; Mayor Brian A. Dea also offered remarks and presented a proclamation. Varela thanked the council and coaches, said he will attend Assumption University and credited Greater Lawrence Tech for the opportunity to play and learn a trade.
Later the council presented a proclamation to Hillary Macdonald, a Lawrence High School senior who the council said became the first girl in the state's history to win three state wrestling championships. Vice President Levy and other councilors praised Macdonald's academic record and leadership; Macdonald told the chamber she aims to pursue pre-med studies and thanked her coach and family.
Both proclamations were adopted by voice vote and included congratulatory remarks from council members and the mayor. The recognitions preceded the meeting's later, lengthier agenda items.
