Bothell schedules open houses for Park Landing, former Wayne Golf Course and PROS plan; skate park fundraising tops $2 million

Staff updated the Parks and Recreation Board on multiple outreach events and project timelines tied to the department’s PROS (Parks, Recreation and Open Space) plan.
Blaine Lan, recreation and community events coordinator, said the Park Landing improvement open house is set for Jan. 22 at Lidal House with topic stations on an inclusive playground, skate park, public art, community spaces and ecological function. Lan said the session is the last broad public input window before the design is refined and will be followed by a February board briefing for those who cannot attend.
Lan previewed a consultant-led kickoff for the former Wayne Golf Course (about 89 acres) on Jan. 15 at city hall. The Wayne open house will include six expert stations (habitat restoration, stormwater, site analysis and others) designed to educate the public about passive vs. active open-space options and to collect questions and feedback. Staff plans to record the session and publish materials online.
Discussing project budgets, parks leadership said final cost estimating is in progress. Nick Stru, parks director, said, “It is not cheap,” but added there are phasing and fundraising options. He noted the skate-park fundraising effort has already secured a little over $2 million toward that component.
Staff also outlined the PROS plan process: more than 700 people participated in a community survey during the plan update; staff plan a Feb. 26 open house to present high-level themes, a March 10 board study session for a deeper review, a March 17 study session with council, and a target for plan adoption in June pending required review steps (including planning commission and state RCO approval).
Board members discussed revenue options to fund major projects, including potential park bonds or levies. Staff said those revenue options require legal and budget processes and no decision was made at the meeting; staff will continue financial analyses and community engagement.
Next steps: staff will present refined Park Landing schematics at the February meeting, complete cost estimates, and continue outreach for the Wayne site and the PROS plan.
