Board approves one-time grant purchase of upgraded Chromebooks after student feedback

Staff said the purchase (PO1-2501451) responds to student feedback collected through a student advisory process: students reported concerns with battery life and application performance on older devices. The district tested new device models with students and selected more powerful devices for secondary students and an ARM-processor model for primary grades to improve battery life.
Miss Michelle Garcia, who answered questions from the board, said the purchase is covered with one-time grant funds. She explained the district maintains a pool of older devices that are reconditioned for interim use, "Frankensteined" for parts to repair units, and that devices beyond reuse are processed through the district's e-waste protocol. Staff said approximately 12 units were intentionally damaged in recent incidents; those cases were handled by site principals with restorative/volunteer measures rather than automatic replacement with the newest models.
Board members asked whether trade-in or recycling value is captured; staff said devices in good condition are refurbished for continued use and unusable units enter the district's e-waste process in accordance with public-fund procurement rules.
The board approved the consent-item purchase as presented during the consent calendar vote.
