Redondo to embed MTSS districtwide; committee selects 'Multitudes' screener for 2025'26

The Redondo Beach Unified School District board heard June 10 that the district will formalize a district-wide Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) and adopt a common screener after a year-long committee process.
Roy Lopez Jr., who introduced the MTSS committee work, said the framework aligns academic, behavioral and social-emotional supports and was embedded into the district strategic plan after a board data dive. The committee set two districtwide goals for June 2026: ensure evidence-based Tier 1 instruction is implemented by all general-education teachers and build educator assessment literacy so staff use objective data to decide who receives interventions.
Committee members outlined five implementation elements for 2025'26: consistent time allocations for core curriculum, district procedures for interventions and SST, a district professional-development focus on assessment literacy, PBIS site teams, and instructional leadership teams conducting multiple data cycles.
On screening, the MTSS academic subcommittee reported piloting several options and selected the screener "Multitudes" based on teacher feedback and alignment with the district's core curriculum. The presenters said Multitudes will be administered in winter 2025'26 after planning and professional development and noted "Multitudes comes at no cost to California public schools." Staff said site-level teams and ILTs will be trained and that the rollout is a multi-year commitment.
Board members asked about the timing and logistics for staff training; district presenters said staff was notified by letter and training dates are being scheduled, with summer rollout activities and ongoing support planned for next year. The committee also emphasized that PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) and social-emotional learning will be implemented across grade spans.
The MTSS work will be coordinated with other LCAP and strategic-plan initiatives and administrators said they will continue to report to the board as implementation timelines and screeners are finalized.
