Emma Drive will remain closed after engineers, state officials inspect mine-related rock slide

Monongalia County officials reported at the March 11 commission meeting that Emma Drive will remain closed after engineers and state emergency mine-land (AML) representatives inspected an active rock slide above the roadway.

An elected official said county engineers met with four state representatives and walked the property above Emma Drive. The speaker noted that the active fall (rock slide) is located on property owned by the town of Granville but runs along old mine property with at least two coal seams that cross the area. ‘‘We’re hopeful that they’ll come through with a solution for us. In the meantime, Emma Drive is going to stay closed,’’ the official said.

Officials discussed uncertainty about whether the state will address only the immediate slide area or the broader corridor; the state’s visit and the identification of underlying mine conditions indicate the problem may require interagency work and possibly remediation tied to historic mining impacts.
