Superintendent Mr. Ariano told the San Bernardino City Unified School District board on Jan. 6 that the district has narrowed its police chief search to three candidates after first-round interviews and expects to conduct second-round interviews with cabinet and a retired sheriff before advancing a finalist for board consideration in February.
Mr. Ariano said the second-round panel will include cabinet members and retired Sheriff Chief Rod Torres and emphasized that background and reference checks for police candidates are more extensive than typical HR reviews. "Our goal is from those three candidates hopefully we can pick a finalist," he said, adding that the board president will be invited to participate in a later round.
At the same meeting the superintendent announced that Sergeant Daniel Aras will serve as interim chief while the process continues. "I want to thank Sergeant Aras for stepping up," Mr. Ariano said, noting he selected an interim who would not be part of the recruitment panels to avoid any appearance of favoritism.
What’s next: second-round interviews are scheduled for the week following the Jan. 6 meeting; the superintendent said the district hopes to present a candidate for board approval in February after completing deeper reference checks and post-offer background requirements.
