On Aug. 5 the Newark Unified board approved a pilot contract to provide Subject (an online credit‑recovery tool) at Bridge Point, after a months‑long conversation about the program’s role and prior abuses of online credit recovery at Newark Memorial High School.
Staff proposed a limited pilot at Bridge Point for students who need credit recovery. During discussion, Member Block asked that some licenses be reserved for roughly 29 rising Newark Memorial seniors who reportedly need one or two courses to graduate with their class. Several trustees opposed adding Memorial licenses during the Aug. 5 meeting, citing concerns about academic integrity, past instances where online credit recovery had been misused, and the fairness of changing graduation expectations days before the school year starts.
Member Hill and others argued that online recovery had been abused in the past — with students removed from semester‑long courses and later credited via online modules — and said that stricter safeguards, oversight and a longer runway for implementation were necessary. Several trustees favored requiring that any Memorial use be run through Bridge Point or other supervised programs rather than unsupervised, at‑school online use.
After discussion, an amendment to add 30 licenses for Newark Memorial failed; the board approved the Subject pilot for Bridge Point only and directed staff to return to the board on Aug. 19 with a recommended approach for Memorial students (including a plan for seniors needing a small number of credits).
Next steps: staff will finalize the Bridge Point pilot implementation and bring a Memorial‑specific plan — including proposals about whether limited Memorial students would be served on another campus, during a supervised program, or via summer school — to the Aug. 19 meeting.
