Modesto City Schools board honors students for perfect CASP and CAST scores

The Modesto City Schools Board recognized dozens of students from elementary, middle and high schools who earned perfect scores on the CASP (ELA/mathematics) and CAST (science) tests; the board then completed roll call and went into a closed session.
President Mestus opened the Oct. 20 board meeting by praising students, families and educators for “perfect scores on the CASP and the CAST” and called the event one of the board’s most enjoyable meetings of the year. She said the students’ results “are a testament to the hard work of the students, their dedication, the commitment and also to the parents,” and invited the community to celebrate their achievement.
Brad Gdau explained the ceremony logistics, saying students would be called by school, principals would announce each honoree and Superintendent Dr. Petrago would place the medals. “Students are then going to come this way … they’ll shake the hand of Superintendent Dr. Petrago who will give the student their medal and then the rest of the board,” Gdau said, and asked parents to remain in the boardroom until a group photo was taken to keep the process efficient.
Site administrators and principals took turns introducing students from dozens of schools who earned perfect scores in ELA, mathematics or the science CAST test. Elementary schools recognized included Brettheart, El Vista, Insulin, Fair View, Franklin, Fremont, Marton, Mure, Robertson Road, Rose Avenue, Shackleford, Soma and Lakewood; junior high honorees were named from Loma and Roosevelt; high-school recognitions included Davis, Downey, Enox, Gregori, Modesto City High and others. In several cases administrators noted students who were being honored but were not present at the ceremony.
The board paused for applause after many introductions and organizers reminded families that refreshments and a photo backdrop would be available outside after the group picture. After the recognitions, the clerk called roll: Trustees Brown, Daly, Irvin, Marks, Vice President Mia and President Mestus were present; Trustee Lopez was absent. The clerk recorded that a quorum was present.
President Mestus then called the formally noticed meeting to order and opened the floor for public comment on items to be discussed in closed session. No members of the public spoke. The board convened into closed (executive) session as scheduled.
The public portion of the meeting concluded with brief congratulations; staff and families proceeded to the group photo and refreshments.
