Edison council honors Edison Jets Pee Wee and JV cheer teams after championship seasons

The Edison Township Council on March 9 adopted two resolutions honoring the Edison Jets Pee Wee and Junior Varsity cheer teams for undefeated seasons and multiple championships.
Council President Joe Coyle opened the March 9 work session by explaining the meeting procedures and public-comment rules before the council took time to recognize the teams. "We proudly recognize and congratulate the members of the 2025-26 Edison Jets Pee Wee cheer team for their remarkable accomplishments," the clerk read as the council moved the resolution to adoption.
In public comment, Taisha Caldwell, speaking on behalf of the Pee Wee team and families, thanked coaches and parents and said the athletes had overcome "adversaries" and many obstacles to become champions. "They did not allow it to stop them," Caldwell said.
Dana Lapenta, who identified herself as coach of the Pee Wee and JV show teams, told the council the season was unprecedented in her 28 years of coaching. "We went undefeated at the national, global, state, regional, and local level," Lapenta said, and described the team’s success as a testament to resilience despite having "1/3 of the resources that lots of other teams have."
Several team members offered brief remarks about teamwork and family. Layla said, "I love this team," while another student, Kasara, called the team a positive, resilient experience.
The council repeated praise for the athletes, their families and coaches during council comments. Councilwoman Patel thanked the parents and coaches and called the athletes "the gems of Edison." The clerk recorded affirmative roll-call votes in favor of the Pee Wee recognition.
Later the council read and adopted a similar resolution recognizing the Edison Jets JV team, noting back-to-back titles and top scores at Level 13 competitions. Jen Westdyke, identified as the Edison Jets Pop Warner cheer coordinator, thanked the coaches and parents and noted the program’s multi-year development of players who in some cases started at age five.
Both resolutions were adopted as presented. After the photo opportunity and recognitions, the council proceeded to routine agenda business and adjourned at 6:35 p.m.
The council did not take policy action related to the recognitions; both items were ceremonial resolutions recorded by roll call.
