Waldwick council swears in two new members, confirms mayoral appointments and adopts temporary 2026 budget

Two newly elected council members were sworn in and the Borough of Waldwick’s governing body moved quickly through a slate of mayoral appointments and consent resolutions at its 2026 reorganization meeting.
Angela A. Smith and Courtney Windgate took the oath of office at the start of the meeting. The clerk read certified election results before administering the oaths. Councilmembers and attendees applauded as each councilwoman was sworn in for terms beginning Jan. 1, 2026.
The council then heard Mayor Tom Gordano read a list of mayoral appointments to boards and committees, including members of the Board of Health, Library Board of Trustees, Board of Adjustment, Environmental Advisory Committee, Waldwick Access for All, and the Office of Emergency Management. The mayor also announced standing committee chairs, liaison representatives to county and regional bodies, and a number of professional-service contract awards and administrative housekeeping resolutions.
A motion to accept the mayor’s nominations was made and seconded; the clerk recorded a roll-call vote in which all present council members voted yes. The record notes one recusal from the appointment of Nadia Lepino to the Board of Adjustment; the transcript indicates a council member stated they would recuse themselves from that particular vote.
The council adopted its consent agenda by unanimous roll call. Among the listed resolutions were items to establish a cash management plan, designate banking depositories, fix interest rates on delinquent taxes and utility charges, authorize cancellation of minor tax delinquencies, and award professional service contracts for borough attorney, labor counsel, engineer, bond counsel, public defender and planner.
Council also adopted Resolution 202645, approving the 2026 temporary budget. That measure passed on a roll-call vote with all voting members recorded as yes.
During the public-comment portion, Bergen County Commissioner Mary Emaroso congratulated the newly sworn council members and presented commendations on behalf of the county. Jared LZ, deputy chief of staff to the county executive, delivered county certificates as well.
What’s next: the council completed its reorganization business and adjourned. The actions approved at the meeting are administrative in nature and establish leadership, appointments, and interim fiscal authority for the borough as staff completes the full 2026 budget process.
