Villa Park Green Commission plans Earth-friendly community events and outreach, eyes April 25 trail cleanup

At its Feb. 17 meeting the Villa Park Green Commission discussed several community events and outreach steps, focusing on the Illinois Prairie Path/Great Western Trail cleanup scheduled for April 25, 2026 and on local recycling and park cleanup needs.

The commission discussed signing up as an organization for the trail cleanup rather than individual volunteers; members suggested taking responsibility for approximately a mile of trail and coordinating logistics with event organizers, who supply trash bags and volunteer coordination. The fund commission indicated interest in collaborating on the cleanup.

Members also discussed a recurring recycling event (spring sweep) with vendor stations for items such as paint, e-waste and clothing; the fund commission may help manage vendors and logistics. Commissioners agreed to work with village staff to arrange vendors, signage and potential social-media promotion once participation is confirmed.

Commissioners raised park-specific cleanups as well, including a proposal to add dedicated collection containers for discarded fishing line at Terrace Park and other ponds to address safety and litter concerns. They agreed to review the village parks inventory to identify ponds, fishing areas and existing trash infrastructure and to consult staff about whether a formal purchase or recommendation is needed.

Next steps: commissioners will confirm participation and volunteer signups with Illinois Prairie Path organizers, coordinate outreach graphics with village communications staff, and return event-planning details at the next meeting.
