Commission supports Main Street 'Truth or Consequences' wayfinding plan to pursue grants

Design consultants described a modular system of approximately 37 signs, including vehicular signs to bring visitors into town, monument signs at historic-district thresholds, and pedestrian "bottom panels" to encourage walking. A distinctive element of the plan is artist-created "toppers" bearing local artwork for select signs; consultants said toppers would go through an approval process and could feature school or community art.
Consultants emphasized compliance with MUTCD/DOT rules (for example, avoiding red on driver-facing signs for safety) and noted the plan includes GIS-based maps, sign schedules, and a design-intent package that a fabricator can convert into shop drawings. Presenters and staff said the plan can be implemented largely with external grant funding (examples cited: Trails+ grants, tourism destination grants, Main Street capital outlay), and Main Street offered to help pursue those funds without asking the city for an immediate financial commitment.
Commissioners asked whether the presentation requested formal adoption or simply a statement of support. Presenters and staff recommended support (letter of support) to enable grant applications now, with a final adopted plan and shop drawings to follow before fabrication and installation. The commission voted unanimously to "support" the plan, with administration agreeing to continue work on final details such as maintenance, sign longevity, replacement plans and potential fee schedules for large outside events.
Next steps: Main Street will pursue grant funding with the commission’s support; staff will continue to refine maintenance/management considerations and return with final fabrication/shop drawings and any recommended fee language prior to installation.
