Commission approves scheduled public use by local shooting club at Adobe Hill range

City Manager Whitehead and Mr. Paxton explained the range’s volunteer origins, facilities and monthly match schedule.
Mr. Paxton said the range was built in 1992 with volunteer labor and that the city purchased the 80-acre site in 2014. He described organized matches on four days per month and said visiting seasonal shooters increase participation from roughly 25 to about 60 members during winter months. He noted that volunteers regularly remove debris — "everything from washing machines and TVs to chunks of concrete" — and that the club historically coordinated cleanup with the city.
Staff emphasized that scheduled events would use one portion of the facility while multiple other bays would remain open to the public; police use of a law-enforcement bay would not change. Commissioners asked about age limits, safety training and coordination with other frequent users; presenters said safety officers are NRA- and USPSA-certified and that the program welcomes newcomers, including youth under supervision.
A motion to authorize ongoing scheduled use by the club was made and passed unanimously.
Next steps: administration will finalize the agreement language and bring an updated resolution later if the commission wishes to standardize fees for large outside events.
