Keene honors 3‑year‑old with life‑saving award after January pool rescue

Chief Warner of the Keene Fire Department presented a life‑saving certificate and honorary department pin to 3‑year‑old Hayden Wilson on April 2, honoring the boy’s role in a January incident in which his older brother alerted neighbors and first responders after a near‑drowning.

"Because of Hayden’s quick thinking, courage, and determination during a critical and frightening moment, help was set in motion without delay," Chief Warner said while presenting the award. He described the emergency response as a coordinated effort among firefighters, EMS and police.

A family member told the council that the family had removed the pool after the incident and is exploring swim lessons at the local YMCA. "He's doing good," the family member said, thanking first responders and noting the community support.

Mayor remarks earlier in the meeting also recognized a recent public dedication for Matthew Davis, a local resident killed in 2023, as an example of the city’s efforts to honor families affected by tragedy.

The award presentation lasted several minutes and included a small medallion and a "challenge point" to mark the child’s bravery; council members and attendees applauded. The presentation concluded with council encouragement for community awareness about water safety and a reminder that first responders often act as a team in such rescues.

Council did not take formal action tied to the award; the recognition was presented as a community acknowledgement and thanks to emergency personnel and neighbors who assisted during the January incident.
