Representative Vaught told the House the resolution grew from an effort to address registration issues that left approximately 150 young women unable to register for Girls State because of a missed deadline she said fell during spring break and because auxiliary organizers would not engage with members. “There are 150 young ladies who deserve to go to Girls State… They met every qualification that was asked of them. The only thing they didn't meet was a deadline,” she said. She said the resolution’s intent was not punitive but to create a pathway for those students and that the House would host its own Girls State event for those young women this summer.
The clerk noted Representative Vaught’s request was proper and placed the resolution on the withdrawal calendar. Vaught said she and several colleagues had spent hours assisting students who were not allowed to register and invited members to help plan the House-hosted program.
No formal vote on the substance of the resolution was recorded on the floor during the session; the action on the floor was the procedural withdrawal placement.
