Rangeley commission gives homeowner until Sept. 1 to hook to town water or face meter requirement

Staff explained the prior owner removed the meter and the new owner plans to renovate and later connect to town water. Commissioners and staff discussed flexibility to avoid charging a homeowner for installing a meter that would soon be replaced when town water service is activated; options included allowing the homeowner to pay the base $55 quarterly fee while the property is vacant or to buy a meter from the department now at cost so it can be re‑used later.
The commission settled on a deadline of Sept. 1; if the homeowner is not hooked to town water by that date, the commission will require a sewer meter to be installed. Staff and commissioners said they will revisit the matter if the homeowner shows progress toward hookup before the deadline.
