Council requests staff study on backyard chickens, setbacks and roosters

On March 25 the council directed the city manager to prepare a staff report evaluating regulation of backyard chickens in Rohnert Park. Councilmember Elward said many residents already keep chickens and asked staff to recommend standards (for example, maximum birds based on lot size and a prohibition on roosters). The motion was seconded and council asked the city manager to prepare options and a staff recommendation for a future meeting.
The direction was procedural; no ordinance or final rules were adopted at the meeting. The city manager will schedule a staff report for a future agenda and will include possible code provisions, enforcement options and neighbors’ remedies where complaints arise.
