The Ceres City Council on April 28 approved acceptance of donated funds from the Coren Foundation to purchase and outfit a 2025 Chevrolet Tahoe for the police department's K9 unit.
Chief Johnson explained the donor relationship and provided an itemized cost breakdown included in the staff report: vehicle purchase $66,980.90; license‑plate reader $18,259.80; in‑vehicle radio $7,727 (approx.); and vehicle buildout (cage, air conditioning, sensors, lights/siren and other equipment) $40,062.18. Staff described the outfitting company and logistics for placing the vehicle into service.
Council members expressed support for the donation and emphasized the operational need for a properly equipped K9 vehicle given recent retirements in the unit. Council approved the associated resolution by roll call vote.
What's next: Staff will accept the funds and proceed with purchasing and building out the vehicle per the donation agreement; the vehicle will be added to the department fleet and assigned to K9 operations.
