City department heads updated the Weed City Council on staffing, infrastructure projects and building-inspection findings.
The building department summarized four civil inspection warrants that revealed a range of deficiencies across several structures, including foundation and ceiling damage, plumbing and electrical code violations, roof leakage and mold indicative of significant moisture problems, compromised rear decks requiring engineered rebuilds, stairway egress issues and reports of prior load-bearing repairs that may not have met code. The building director said a final report prepared by John Penberton of the building department will be available in the near future.
Fire Chief Carter reported current staffing and training: "We currently have seven sleepers... when June comes around six of them will be working for CalFire this summer and one of them will be one of our seasonal firefighters," he said, and added that several temporary firefighters had just started orientation and others recently graduated from academy training. Police staff noted one vacant patrol position and recruitment challenges; city finance and utilities staff previewed upcoming audits, budget adjustments and a White Avenue sewer/paving project and water-tower telemetry (SCADA) work.
Council members thanked staff for the updates and requested the final building-inspection report when completed.
