The House of Representatives adopted House Resolution 208 commending the finalists and distinguished nominees for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Hawaii 2026 Youth of the Year awards.
Representative Yamashita, who offered the resolution with Representative Poepoe and moved for its adoption, said the clubs provide “a fun, educational” after‑school environment that helps students develop leadership and community service habits. "This award is the highest honor for the Boys and Girls Clubs that a member can receive," Yamashita said on the floor in support of the measure.
Colleagues introduced and praised several finalists before the vote. Representative Poepoe highlighted Leia Williamson of the Makawao Clubhouse, noting her 3.8 GPA and involvement in school clubs and athletics. Representative Tampos described Amari Spinks’ Keystone Club projects and a teen mental‑health platform called Keymari Chat. Representative Morikawa introduced Matthew Masaya Cargol, a long‑time Waianae Club participant and state Youth of the Year finalist, and Representative LaChica recognized Dylan Tibbs as a Military Youth of the Year finalist.
After brief remarks and applause, the House voted to adopt the resolution; the motion carried and the presiding officer called a recess to allow members to meet and congratulate the honorees.
The action was ceremonial and did not create new policy or appropriation directives; it formally recognizes the nominees and celebrates their leadership and service.
