Urbana announces arts grants timeline; poet laureate application period extended to April 27

City staff told the Urbana Arts and Culture Commission that the Urbana Arts and Culture (UAC) grants application will go live March 23 and close April 27, 2026, using the Neighborly application portal. Commissioners were asked to help publicize the call and to serve on juries.
Olivia Jovi, director of community development services, and Rachel Storm, returning part-time arts and culture coordinator, said the program will use the same tier structure as previous years and that the city will not adjust funding tiers for the 2026–27 cycle to avoid confusion for applicants.
Key dates and process: staff said applications open March 23 and close April 27; juries are tentatively scheduled for May 18 (tier 1) and May 19 (tier 2), each roughly 5:00–7:00 p.m.; the commission will be presented with the jury-selected slate at its June 9 meeting; contracts are expected to be signed by June 15 and the grant period is planned to run July 1 to June 30 of the next year.
The poet laureate application deadline was extended from March 1 to April 27, 2026, because staff said outreach and uptake were lower than expected and they wanted a more robust applicant pool; Commissioner Buckman agreed to help coordinate the jury and onboarding process for the incoming poet laureate.
Staff also said they will provide an evergreen recorded workshop (FAQ-style) for applicants instead of multiple live sessions because the coordinator role is currently part time. The Neighborly portal requires first-time applicants to create an account; staff encouraged applicants to reuse the same username for multiple submissions.

Olivia Jovi said, "we will not be making any adjustments to the tier funding at this stage." Storm added that she will be working part time (up to 20 hours a week) during the transition and will support applicants and communications.
Communications: staff said promotion will use the city website, a press release, social media and the city newsletter; Bridget (city communications specialist) will assist with outreach. The evergreen arts grant email will be the primary inbox for inquiries and staff provided Rachel's city email for contact.
