Echo Housing, Monterey County and Salinas organize tenant‑rights and fair‑housing workshops across the county

Christina Sodto, executive director of Echo Housing, said the nonprofit is working with Monterey County and several cities to bring fair‑housing and tenant‑rights workshops to each Salinas city council district and other jurisdictions. "We would be providing these tenant and ordinance workshops to every city council district in the city of Salinas," she said, describing completed sessions in three districts and additional sessions planned.
Quanis Garlington of the city of Salinas gave details for a District 2 session on March 19 from 6:00–7:30 p.m. at the César Chávez Library, with a Zoom option. The workshop will cover AB 1482 (the Tenant Protection Act) and four local rental ordinances — rental registration, rent stabilization, just‑cause eviction/tenant protections, and anti‑harassment protections — and will explain what each rule regulates and how they apply in real situations.
Speakers said workshops aim to make complex state and local rules more accessible, create space for meaningful questions, and provide options for sessions that split tenants and property owners when participants prefer separate forums. Echo Housing also offers monthly regional fair‑housing Zoom workshops and plans additional April events (Seaside on April 22 and Monterey workshops April 27–29).
City and nonprofit speakers described outreach that emphasizes partnership and neutral education to reduce conflict and help both landlords and tenants understand obligations and options. Organizers encouraged residents to sign up via Echo Housing’s website and said flyers and local outreach channels will be used to boost attendance.
What’s next: District 2 workshop March 19 (hybrid); additional hybrid and online sessions in April focusing on fair housing and separate sessions for tenants and property owners where requested.
