Commission backs pilot wayfinding signs for Commercial Street parking lot

The Nevada City Planning Commission voted to recommend that the City Council approve a pilot wayfinding sign for the Commercial Street parking lot entrance.
Planner Lisa introduced the pilot and said the sign is sized 18 by 24 inches with a universal blue "P" symbol to aid driver recognition and a copper-tone accent consistent with city design elements. Community development technician and graphic designer Bethany Celio explained the font choices (a sans serif for legibility and a bracketed serif for accents) and the decision to pare written information on the face of the sign so instructions can be distributed within the lot and at kiosks. The signs will be laminated aluminum with nonreflective finish; the payment/kiosk signs will be reflective to improve visibility at night.
Staff described the pilot as part of a July rollout that will include a ParkMobile implementation and a central kiosk. Commissioners endorsed the pilot design and voted to recommend council approval for the two pilot locations (Commercial Street and near the Veterans Hall), noting the signage can be adjusted if the trial shows the design does not meet needs.
Next steps: Staff will forward the commission’s recommendation to the City Council and proceed with pilot procurement and installation if council approves.
