Council agrees to send support letter for South Bay micromobility parking study; asks for more detail before any local deployments

The Lawndale City Council unanimously authorized a letter of support for a South Bay Cities Council of Governments (COG) grant application to fund a micromobility destination-parking study.

Staff explained the grant would underwrite a parking analysis to identify candidate locations near schools, parks, shopping centers and employment hubs where micromobility vehicles (e-bikes, scooters and other small vehicles) could be parked safely. The study would be regional in scope and would not obligate Lawndale to accept deployments; any particular placement within Lawndale would require separate agreements and local approval.

Council discussion focused on whether parking would be on public streets or private property, how many vehicles might occupy curbside spaces, and safety concerns for smaller cities. Several council members said the study was appropriate because it only produces analysis and does not commit the city to installations.

A resident and community advocate noted the study could help the region create connected routes and safer parking for students and weekend users; another resident said micromobility is already in use and that analysis could help regulate behavior and compliance.

Council voted unanimously to provide the COG with a support letter; staff said the COG was on a short timeline for the grant and requested the city’s electronic signature if available.

Next steps: staff will transmit the letter of support and may follow up with the COG to clarify whether future deployments in Lawndale would be on-street or on private property and how many devices the study envisions per site.
