The House Government Committee advanced SB 294, the Senate companion to House Bill 530, to give county officials a 15-day grace period to correct deficiencies in required bonds before their offices are vacated, Representative Paramore said.
"This is the Senate companion bill to House Bill 530 ... It deals with regarding bonding requirements for public officials and employees," Rep. Paramore said, adding the measure authorizes the office that receives a filed bond to notify the submitting officer when a bond has become deficient and to allow the officer to remedy deficiencies within 15 days before leaving office.
Paramore said the change is intended to prevent automatic removal from office over paperwork timing: "Sometimes these individuals don't really know what the bonding requirements are when they get put into these and then if they don't do it immediately, they're automatically removed from that office. So, this is just giving them a little grace period to get paperwork done properly."
Committee members did not record substantive opposition in the debate. A motion to report the bill favorably was made and adopted by voice vote; the chair declared the bill passed out of committee.
The bill is the Senate companion to a House measure already passed by the House, according to Paramore. The committee provided a favorable report and moved the measure forward to the next legislative step.
