Encinitas council urges long-term funding plan for Fire Stations 1 and 6

Council members on the Encinitas City Council pressed staff to add a long-term funding strategy for Fire Station 1 and Fire Station 6 to the FY 2026–27 work plan and to evaluate how both projects fit within a consolidated five-year capital improvement program.
"I would add a second goal bullet in there, which is develop a long-term funding strategy for fire station one and fire station 6," Mayor Aers said during deliberations. Council members and staff discussed that funding timing depends on the city’s borrowing capacity and how projects would be prioritized within the CIP; staff said consultants’ facility condition assessments and the pavement-management program will feed into CIP prioritization.
Council members also asked staff to present cost estimates and financing options when the work plan returns in May so the council can consider whether to carry projects into the next fiscal cycle or sequence them across multiple years. No motion or binding decision was made; staff will return the work plan with the requested financial framing and SMART objectives.
