American Heart Association recognized volunteers; AHA says district activities reached thousands and funded equipment

The Hillsborough board on June 23 paused its agenda to recognize volunteers who partnered with the American Heart Association and to honor the district's athletic champions.
Katie Fina, representing the American Heart Association in Somerset County, said six district schools participated in AHA programs this year and that the program reached roughly 3,300 students and staff; about 1,100 families registered for program materials and 184 students and families learned hands-only CPR. She said the fundraising tied to the schools raised about $55,000 overall and that roughly $6,000 already had been invested in the district's health and PE equipment.
Fina thanked volunteer PE teachers and school leaders by name and invited staff to share anecdotes from school events such as an inflatable race at one elementary school. Board members congratulated the volunteers and athletic teams recognized earlier in the meeting.
What happens next: the district and AHA plan to continue the partnership and to use funds directed back to the district for health and PE equipment; volunteers and teachers will continue program activities during the upcoming school year.
