Chico Unified approves $5.15M bid for Little Chico Creek TK, hears design concepts for four elementary sites

The Chico Unified School District board on April 16 awarded a $5,150,000 contract to United Building Contractors (local low bidder) to build a transitional-kindergarten complex and complete a light modernization at Little Chico Creek. Staff said the work includes three new TK classrooms, administrative-office reconfiguration for single-point entry, a fire-alarm upgrade, and an ADA/special-education restroom with changing table.
Facilities staff and DLR Group architects also presented pre-design concepts for four elementary campuses. The Citrus Elementary project, funded from remaining Measure K dollars and state facilities funds, includes a TK complex and upgrades to HVAC, windows and interior finishes; staff said site constraints mean the project will be a "light touch" modernization for parts of the historic campus.
At Rosedale, Chapman and Park View architects described a "pod" classroom prototype emphasizing natural light, indoor breakout/flex space and outdoor learning courtyards. Plans call for larger multipurpose rooms, secure single-point entries, and designs tailored to each school's character (multicultural programming at Rosedale; generational community identity at Chapman; park/STEM emphasis at Park View). Staff said phasing will attempt to preserve classroom operations during construction.
Why it matters: The bid award allows construction to begin on a TK building the district prioritized to expand early learning capacity; the design concepts outline the next wave of capital projects and the district's intent to pursue schematic design pending funding and DSA review.
Next steps: UBC will be awarded the contract and staff will manage construction over the summer; schematic-design work will continue for the other campuses with community engagement and a May package to the board.
