Chico Unified trustees voted April 16 to approve draft surveys for parents, teachers and students designed to inform a forthcoming workshop on district Chromebook usage.
The surveys, prepared by district staff, ask how much time students use Chromebooks at school and at home, whether teachers schedule screen breaks, and parents' familiarity with device-management tools such as Securly (the district's web-filter/parent-portals). Tim and John from the district technology team said responses will be broken out by school and grade band so the district can identify differences between elementary, middle and high schools.
John said parents can use the district's device-management portal to see sites visited and to schedule evening access, but current tools do not provide precise minute-by-minute time-on-site metrics. Public commenters urged that the survey better measure parents' knowledge of device features (webcam access, YouTube) and requested brief optional open-text fields for nuance; the board asked staff to fold those suggestions into the final draft.
Next steps: Staff will finalize edits, launch the surveys before the end of the school year and present disaggregated results at the planned Chromebook workshop for the board and public.
