Imperial Valley College trustee announces 'Women in Law Enforcement' day for Jan. 30, 2026

Peter Martinez, an Imperial Valley College trustee, used his presentation time at the Calexico Unified board meeting to announce a new regional outreach initiative: the first 'Women in Law Enforcement Day' on Friday, Jan. 30, 2026, aimed at empowering high‑school girls interested in law‑enforcement careers.

Martinez described the program as a one‑day academy running roughly 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with an expected 150 participating students who will receive certificates of participation. He described a steering committee that includes partners from law enforcement, education and community organizations and thanked local partners and sponsors, including the Imperial County Office of Education and Imperial Valley College leadership.

Martinez said community supporters include Imperial County Probation, the Imperial County District Attorney’s Office, California State Assembly member Jeff Gonzalez, Imperial County Supervisor Peggy Price, and municipal leaders. He noted Sun Community Federal Credit Union agreed to sponsor meals for the students. He asked Calexico Unified to encourage pre‑registration through school sites so students may attend.

"We have a unique opportunity to ignite enthusiasm and foster aspirations of the next generation of leaders," Martinez told the board, explaining the event was designed to "empower high school female students in our region who aspire to pursue careers in law enforcement." The announcement concluded with an invitation to districts and community partners to participate and support student pre‑registration.

The board accepted the presentation and posed no formal questions; the district agreed to assist with circulation of pre‑registration materials.
