Public comment on March 10 featured a range of community requests including a formal proposal to designate a managed encampment for unsheltered residents, a plea for city support for a low‑cost summer camp at the Orange Street Community Center, and multiple neighborhood calls for traffic calming.
Deanna Gardner of Mother Love, Inc. urged the board to explore zoning and designating a legal managed encampment to reduce repeated trespassing charges, centralize outreach and sanitation, and create clearer pathways to services and case management. Gardner said a local site had housed people for nearly a year with minimal disturbance and cited Wake County’s Eliza Park project as a model for structured oversight.
Representatives of the Orange Street Community Center asked for city support for Curtain Call summer camp; Glattis Holly described music, drama and puppetry programming, noted the camp served about 44 children in 2025 despite a modest $10 registration fee, and said organizers provided breakfast and lunch to participants.
Residents also pressed the board about neighborhood speed bumps, stop signs and flashing lights; the board discussed these items in a later agenda action and voted to install cushions and flashing signage on specified streets.
What’s next: The board referred safety concerns to Public Works for design and procurement and accepted the public‑service requests into its agenda for future budget and partnership consideration.
