Board presses for more forestry staffing as Credit Island cleanup continues

Board members at the March 19 meeting lauded recent cleanup work on Credit Island but used advisory time to press staff for more arborists and faster removal of dangerous or obstructive tree debris.
A board member summarized recent inspections and said crews have been working to clear dead trees and open vistas to the river. "I'm real happy with that," the member said, citing improvements at the lodge and shoreline work to make the river more visible.
Another board member repeated a long-standing plea for additional arborists on city staff. "We need more arborists," the member said, noting that contractors and cross‑department assistance help but that Forestry’s small team is stretched thin.
Staff described current measures to control silt and sediment, noted coordination with the natural‑resources division in Public Works for wetland and grant work, and said some larger infrastructure or causeway changes would involve the U.S. Army Corps and carry substantive cost implications for the city.
On disc golf, staff said they plan to continue mowing fairways and will pursue future grant opportunities to restore native vegetation if funding becomes available.
