San Miguel County adopts West End Vision Plan, joins regional stewardship effort

The San Miguel County Board of Commissioners unanimously adopted the West End Vision Plan on March 18, formalizing a community‑generated roadmap for priorities across the West End region.
Community Builders partners presented the plan, which organizers said grew from two years of outreach (more than 700 residents, 120 community meetings and volunteer teams). The document organizes community values into eight long‑term goals and roughly 45 strategies; an accompanying action plan ranks “quick wins” (resource directories, a regional coordination team and apprenticeship expansions), and “big moves” (staffing/funding for regional implementation, utility investments, health‑care access and a vacant‑housing program).
Several participants — including local health and housing volunteers and representatives from the Uncompahgre Medical Center — urged adoption at the meeting, citing improved regional coordination, support for health‑care expansions and opportunities to return vacant homes to productive use. Commissioners said adoption does not change local code directly but strengthens the region’s alignment when applying for grants and when jurisdictions take land‑use or policy actions.
The board adopted the plan by resolution and nominated Commissioner Kalina Gleason to represent the county on the plan’s stewardship group; commissioners encouraged towns and partner agencies to join implementation efforts.
