Moriarty-Edgewood board adopts FY26 operating budget and approves multiple capital projects

The Moriarty-Edgewood School District board voted on May 20 to adopt the district's fiscal year 2026 operating budget and approved several capital contracts and budget adjustments.
Antuinette Young, who led the budget presentation, said the district moved approximately $450,000 in salaries and benefits from the Title I budget into the operational budget after a federal Title I reduction and added several staff positions funded in the operating plan, including an assistant principal at Minority Elementary, a career-technical/work-based learning coordinator, an additional security guard at the high school and a family and consumer sciences teacher. Young also said the district increased athletic coaching and lunch duty stipends, continued afterschool program funding and raised office-staff pay. She reported a separate IDEA-B reduction of about $100,000 that required shifting 0.2 and 0.5 FTE back into the operating budget to maintain services.
Superintendent Viviano praised staff and the finance committee for focusing on sustainable hires and noted transportation revenue is expected to rise by about $400,000 while warning that salary and benefit increases will absorb part of that gain.
On a motion and voice vote at the regular meeting, trustees approved the FY26 operating budget. The board also approved the district's PED BAR (budget adjustment request) for FY2024'25 and routine consent-agenda finance items.
In related business the board voted to award a quote for the high-school track to Lone Mountain Contracting Inc.; approved an asphalt-paving project for Center Street with Sunland Asphalt and Construction LLC (trustees discussed scheduling and temporary traffic controls to avoid peak school pick-up/drop-off); and authorized Apex Solutions to replace the Morardi High School Performing Arts Center fire-alarm system to reduce recurring "fire watch" arrangements and bring maintenance closer to other district systems. All of those contract approvals were taken by motion and carried on voice votes as recorded in the meeting.

What happens next District staff said they will finalize scheduling with contractors to minimize disruption during school hours and return necessary documentation to auditors and county clerks where required. The board will consider election-related resolutions at its June meeting (see separate coverage of the bond-election presentation).
