Germantown school board candidates debate communication, facilities and schedules

Candidates for Germantown School Board seats discussed district communication, facilities planning and policy during a chamber-hosted forum that drew multiple parents and community members.

Kim Higen Botham, chair of the teaching and learning committee, said the board must prioritize student‑centered decisions and stronger outreach. "Building strong children is the foundation for building strong communities," she told the audience. Opponents and challengers likewise emphasized clearer, more digestible communications: Molly Busy proposed post‑meeting one‑page summaries and a public strategic plan with timelines; Ann Utek recommended searchable meeting transcripts and a community email opt‑in so residents can receive agendas and materials.

On facilities, candidates said the district has a five‑year capital plan based on vendor assessments and condition studies; several urged shifting to more proactive maintenance and to increase the capital fund toward a $700,000 target for major repairs. On elementary start times, most candidates defended the board27s process while acknowledging survey design and outreach could be improved.

Asked whether nonusers of the bus system should receive a tax discount, candidates generally opposed carving out specific exemptions and stressed the shared‑cost nature of public schooling: multiple candidates framed schools as a community asset that benefits property values and long‑term local stability.

Candidates closed by asking residents to vote in April and saying they would prioritize transparent budgeting, clearer communications and measured facility planning.
