District recognizes bus driver and aide for lifesaving response to choking student

The Morris School District publicly recognized two transportation employees for actions that averted a medical emergency on a school bus.
Greg Sumsky, the district’s director of transportation, told the board that a student on a Freeling Heisen bus alerted staff that a peer was choking. According to Sumsky, the bus aide, identified in the meeting as Miss Glattis Escobar Soda, performed the Heimlich maneuver while driver Ezrubal Kros pulled the bus over, radioed dispatch and called 911. Sumsky said the choking object was dislodged after several attempts, emergency personnel arrived and the child recovered fully.
Sumsky presented certificates of recognition to both staff members and thanked them for keeping the other 40 students calm during the incident. The board expressed its gratitude and paused for a brief reception to acknowledge their actions.
