Exchange student presents U.S. State Department medallion recognizing Morristown High School

During public comment the board received a brief, well-received presentation from an exchange student who said he had served as a goodwill ambassador for his country while attending Morristown High School.
Yasan Shiao, an exchange student from Germany, told the board he was presenting a U.S. Department of State certificate of appreciation recognizing Morristown High School as a medallion-level host school for exchange programs. “I’m an exchange student from Germany enrolled at Morristown High School as a junior,” he said, and described participating in sports, orchestra and classes he said would not be available in his home country.
Host parent Michael Wargo thanked the administration, teachers and families for welcoming Yasan. “This recognition is given to schools that go above and beyond in embracing international exchange students,” he said. AFS volunteer liaison Julia Hodm described AFS’s role placing students and supporting host families and urged continued district partnership and recruitment of new host families.
Board members thanked the presenters and said the student’s exemplary participation reinforced the district’s commitment to exchange programs.
What’s next: district staff said they will continue partnering with AFS and other exchange sponsors to enroll international students and to promote host-family recruitment.
