Tuscaloosa City Council on a unanimous vote tabled demolition orders for two residential properties and granted both owners 90 days to make further repairs.
City staff presented the first case as the condemnation of a property listed at 1421 18th Court East, which staff said had been condemned Sept. 19, 2025, and cited 46 housing code violations. Mr. Williams, speaking for city staff, said the owner had been notified and had made some repairs (removing a rotted deck, repairing an accessory building and clearing stored items), but that no representative appeared at the meeting. With the owner absent, councilmembers moved and seconded a motion to defer final action and give 90 days for additional progress; the motion carried unanimously.
The council then considered a condemnation order for 6414 31st Street, which staff said had about 45 code violations. A person identifying herself as representing that property said, "I have been steady working on it and we are seeing more progress, but I still need a little bit more time to get finished." Councilmembers moved and seconded a motion to table the demolition and allow 90 days; that motion also passed unanimously.
The decisions mean the city will revisit the two properties at the end of the 90-day period to determine whether demolition or other enforcement is necessary. The council did not vote to demolish either property at the meeting.
